Happy Monday! As we wrap up May’s theme on Upskilling, it’s a good time to pause, reflect, and ask ourselves: what have we learned, and more importantly, what will we do with it?
Over the past few weeks, we have explored the growing importance of continuous learning and intentional growth in today’s evolving professional landscape. We began with Week 1: "The Skills Gap is Real: Are You Prepared?", where we examined the very real disconnect between the skills organizations need and those professionals often have. It was a call to awareness and a reminder that no matter how seasoned or accomplished we are, we must never stop learning. Week 2: “Skill Stacking: Your Unique Edge in a Crowded Field.” We explored how combining different (even unconventional) skill sets can create a competitive advantage. Your unique mix of abilities is often more valuable than mastery in one. Then, in Week 3: “Unlearning to Relearn" we addressed the fact that sometimes the biggest barrier to growth isn’t what we don’t know, it’s what we’re unwilling to let go of. We examined the importance of shedding outdated methods and assumptions to make space for new thinking.
Now, in this final week of the series, we bring it all together with the most important step of all: Building a Personal Upskilling Plan. Because inspiration without implementation is just a good idea. It’s time to move from knowing to doing. Here’s a straightforward guide you can use to create your personal upskilling plan.
Let's get into it!
Step 1: Define Your Direction
Ask: Where am I trying to go professionally?
Do you want to transition industries?
Step into leadership?
Deepen technical expertise?
Start a business?
Clarity of purpose narrows the field of what you need to learn. Without a north star, you’ll waste energy on things that won’t serve your goals. This step is crucial because upskilling is context-dependent. A global development professional may need to invest in results-based financing skills. A mid-career lawyer in a multilateral agency might need to add policy analysis or negotiation across cultures. What do YOU need?
Strategic Tip: Match your learning to where opportunity density lies—that is, areas with high growth and demand across multiple sectors (e.g., data literacy, cross-sector collaboration, systems thinking, AI fluency, digital communications).
Use CareerExplorer or the Indeed Career Paths Tool to map potential career directions and required skills.
Check sector-specific career frameworks, such as UN or World Bank competency models, for insight into high-value skills.

Step 2: Conduct a Multi-Dimensional Skills Audit
Once your direction is clear, assess your starting point. Consider:
Core skills – Technical or industry-specific expertise (e.g., data analysis, grant writing, research methods).
Power skills – Communication, leadership, emotional intelligence, adaptability.
Digital literacy – AI tools, data visualization, remote collaboration platforms.
Strategic Tip:
Try FutureFit AI or Coursera’s SkillSets to benchmark your skills against in-demand profiles.
Use feedback from peers, past performance reviews, or mentorship conversations to get perspective.
Don't overlook hidden strengths like your ability to mentor others, facilitate cross-cultural collaboration, or stay calm under pressure. These can be part of your skill stack.
Step 3: Identify Your “Keystone Skill” for This Year
A keystone skill is one that creates momentum across multiple goals. Essentially, it’s the highest return-on-investment skill for your current stage.
Ask:
What’s one skill that, if mastered, would increase my effectiveness or open new doors?
What would make me more promotable, visible, or adaptable?
What complements the skills I already have to create a stronger value stack?
Strategic Tip: Choose a skill at the intersection of three things: market relevance, personal interest, and role applicability.
There are many free and accessible resources to help you: For example, use LinkedIn Learning, edX, Coursera Professional Certificates, or OpenLearn for curated, low-cost or free courses aligned with real-world application.
Step 4: Set Impact-Driven Goals
Don’t just aim to “improve.” Set tiered learning goals that reflect knowledge acquisition and practical application. Also plan for execution. Here's a simple example:
Knowledge: Complete a fundamentals course on stakeholder engagement
Application: Facilitate a community consultation for your team’s next project
Execution: Share your process at a staff retreat or conference panel.
Strategic Tip: Connect your learning to real opportunities inside or outside your current role. Upskilling should enhance performance now, not just in the future.
Step 5: Don’t Just Choose a Learning Path - Activate It
Step 5 is the part that often trips people up. We set incredible plans but fail to execute, wondering why we are not achieving our goals. So this time - don't just choose a learning path - activate and execute it with intention. Below are three powerful pathways examples. Pick at least one and decide how you’ll act on it this week.
1. Self-Paced Courses: Commit to Completion
Want structure and flexibility? Choose a short online course that teaches your target skill and block out time to complete it.
Stop Saying: "One I will look for a course and start it."
Start Saying: "I am starting a relevant course and finishing it by [insert set date]."
2. Mentorship & Peer Learning: Reach Out to Someone Today
Let someone know that you are on your personal upskilling journey and reach out to learn.
This week: Identify one person in your network who is strong in the skill you want to build.
Send a message: “Can I pick your brain for 20 minutes on building [insert skills]?”
Join or create a circle: Konseye community forum or other communities are great for monthly check-ins and shared learning. Reach out and join a free group mentoring session where you would not only learn from an industry expert you will also learn from your peers in these small group sessions.
Stop Saying: “I’ll ask when I’m ready.”
Start Saying: “I’m scheduling one learning conversation this week.”
3. On-the-Job Practice: Turn Learning into Leadership
Are you currently in a working environment where you can seek stretch opportunities and learn from others around you? Don't wait for your manager or other company representative to suggest opportunities to you; look for a live project, challenge, or opportunity to use your target skill imperfectly but intentionally and ask to join that project. The worst they can say is no but the best they can say is yes. But you would never know until you ask and express your interest.
This week: Spot one way to apply the skill at work or in your volunteer/community space.
Ask: “Can I provide support on this project?” or “I’d love to try this approach, can I give it a shot?”
Reflect on your learning: What worked? What didn’t? What will you try differently next time?
Stop Saying: “I need to master it first.”
Start Saying: “I’ll use my next task to stretch this skill.”
