Hello Friends,
Happy Monday! Welcome to May and a new theme! This month we are exploring "Upskilling." You have probably heard this term, you have probably been told that you need to "upskill" to stay relevant in a constantly shifting world, but you may be uncertain as to which skills you should focus on. Well, this month we are going to try to break that down in 4 bite-sized #MondayMusing posts throughout the month.
Let's start out with addressing the "skills gap." This term keeps cropping up across boardrooms, summits, and professional networks. Last month I attended a Harvard Graduate School of Education conference addressing the skills gap in education in Africa. Experts talked about whether universities are truly preparing young people for the realities of today’s workforce or they are still teaching for a world that no longer exists. So what exactly is the skills gap, why should you care and, most importantly, what should I do to respond to it?
That's what we're going to deal with today. Let's get into it!
What Is the Skills Gap?
At its core, the skills gap refers to the growing mismatch between the skills employers need and the skills people currently have. While much of the public discourse has focused on technical gaps like AI literacy the truth is far more complex. Skills gaps also include critical thinking, cultural intelligence, cross-sector collaboration, and the ability to adapt to unfamiliar contexts.
Why Is The Skills Gap More Urgent Than Ever?
A 2023 report by the World Economic Forum predicted that by 2027, 44% of the core skills needed for work will have changed. For professionals in under-resourced or rapidly evolving contexts such the Global South, the urgency is compounded by unequal access to training and development opportunities. The global conversation on upskilling must therefore include equity, accessibility, and inclusion or we, as a global community, risk deepening existing divides.
How Should Individuals Respond?
Shift from Expertise to Learning Agility
Many of us were taught that the goal of education is to become an expert. But in today's world, it’s more important to be a learner than an expert. Agility, not certainty, is the currency of the future.
Ask yourself: When was the last time I deliberately learned something new that pushed me out of my comfort zone?
Curate Your Learning
You do not have to wait for a formal course or a supervisor’s approval to grow. There is an abundance of high-quality, free or low-cost learning opportunities online from platforms like Coursera, edX, and LinkedIn Learning, to webinars and newsletters specific to your field. Choose one area where you want to grow, and start small.
Tip: Commit to just 30 minutes a week of intentional learning.
Learn in Community & Through Mentorship
Upskilling does not have to be a solo journey. Peer accountability groups, industry networks, and mentorship networks like Konseye: The Mentorship Network can help you identify the core skills you should focus on, stay on track, offer fresh perspectives, and make the learning process more meaningful.
Wondering how mentorship can help close the skills gap? Consider these points:
Mentorship offers real-world and practical insights that are far beyond the classroom.
A mentor can help you build confidence and avoid costly missteps.
A mentor can help create access - networks, knowledge, and opportunities that open doors.
Reflection: Who can I learn with or from in this season?
So… Are You Prepared?
The skills gap is real but it is also an invitation to grow and to reimagine your role in a world that is changing quickly.
This week, take a moment to ask yourself:
What skills are becoming essential in my field and where am I in that picture?
What is one small step I can take this month to invest in my own learning?
How can I help others bridge the gap too?
Growth is not linear and it is not a solo journey. Join us today at www.konseye.org and grow in community.
Have a wonderful week and remember: With The Right Network Anything Is Possible.™
