Finish Well: What Does The Year Say About You?

Hello Friends,

Happy Monday! The holiday season is very close by and as the year draws to a close, many of us feel the familiar pull to tick off the remaining tasks, chase unmet goals, and wrap up unfinished projects. In today's #MondayMusing we'll talk more about reflection, awareness, and alignment and I invite you to find some time - in the busyness of this season - to reflect on this question: What Does The Year Say About You?

First things first, this question is not about judging yourself or creating a list of successes and failures. Remember that your achievements (e.g. got a promotion, acquired a degree etc) do not (on their own) say anything about YOU or who you have become. What matters is what character traits or skills you had to develop, or what part of you was tested in the process or throughout the year and how you came on the other side. Answering the question requires you to look a bit deeper to see the story the year has told you through your actions, choices, and growth. The way we spend our time, respond to challenges, and show up for ourselves and others reveals far more than any checklist ever could.

To guide your reflection, consider exploring these three prompts:

Prompt #1: How Have I Grown?

Looking back throughout this year, what would you say about you mindset (overall)? Did you find yourself oscillating between positive and negative thoughts?  Did setbacks teach you something about yourself that you hadn’t realized before? What made you struggle the most and how did you handle it? Did your perspective on certain things change? When you identify answers to these questions, consider the character traits that you would have needed to, for example, stay in a positive mindset or overcome the major challenges you faced this year. Circle them - those are part of who you became this year.

So even if you may not have any "major milestone" to mark or share on social media - perhaps you became more resilient, developed tools to counter negative self-thought, or took more steps at being disciplined. These and other character traits are amazing and it is important to take time to celebrate these ways that you have grown.  Growth is often subtle, visible only when we pause to notice patterns over time. So please pause, reflect, and celebrate how you have grown.

Prompt #2: Where Did I Show Up for What Matters?

To get into the prompt, here's another question you could ask yourself: how aligned was I throughout the year with the things that matter TO ME? I emphasize "to me"  because we often find ourselves challenged by societal or family expectations that may differ from our own. Even work circumstances could place expectations on us that are not aligned with our personal and professional trajectory. Since your life is YOURS alone, it is important to identify what matters to you and how you showed up in pursuit of that throughout the year.

Prompt #3: What Do I Want to Carry Forward?

The main goal of reflecting on the past is to equip yourself for where you want to go. Reflection is about using the insights you learned to shape your future. So even if you identified things you did not like about how you showed up in 2025 or how you responded to various life challenges, use these insights as information to guide who you want to become in 2026.

Take some time to identify one lesson, habit, or mindset from this year that you want to nurture in the year ahead. Similarly, recognize patterns, behaviors, or distractions you wish to release.

Friends remember that finishing well involves learning, letting go, and stepping forward with intention. I'm going to be spending the remainder of the year doing this for myself and I invite you to engage in a similar reflection as well. This will really help shape your 2026 with intention and purpose. And hopefully, when you look through 2025 you will find many examples of where you can feel super proud of yourself.

Wishing you a wonderful week - may you find some time for reflection, connection, and joy in the lead into the holidays.
