Hello Friends,
Happy New Week and just like that, we’ve come to the final #MondayMusing in this series on the career questions people are asking quietly but feeling deeply.
Today’s question: “Why does my career feel stagnant?"
Let’s start with some honesty. Feeling stuck is far more common than people admit. In fact, research shows that a significant number of professionals experience periods where growth slows or feels completely stalled. So if you taken nothing else from this article, please take this:
Feeling stuck is not a sign that something is wrong with you.
It is often a sign that something needs to change in how you’re approaching your career.
Let’s break this down in a real way. Here are 3 reasons you may feel stuck in your career and what you can do about them.
1. You Have Outgrown Your Current Role (But Haven’t Acknowledged It Yet)
One of the clearest signs of a career plateau is when your work no longer challenges or stretches you. In fact, it is so mundane and so easy you could do it in your sleep.
You know the systems. You understand the expectations. Nothing feels new anymore. This is what researchers call a “content plateau” when your work becomes repetitive and no longer develops your skills.
What to do about it:
If you are still interested in this particular career path and organization here are some steps you can take:
Ask for stretch assignments or projects outside your usual scope
Start building new skills that align with where you want to go—not just where you are
Have an honest conversation with your manager about growth (not just workload)
Sometimes the issue isn’t that there are no opportunities. It’s that you’ve quietly outgrown the ones you have.
2. You Are Waiting for the System to Move You Forward
This is a huge trap many professionals fall into. We've all been told to work hard, be consistent, stay loyal, and eventually you will be rewarded. Well that's false and that does not reflect how the career landscape works. So you may find yourself hitting a career plateau where opportunities for advancement are limited regardless of how capable you are. As you keep waiting frustration, resentment, and stagnation seep in.
Remember one thing: you are the main character in your life. Do not outsource your career advancement to anyone even if it feels as though it is someone else who will promote you.
What to do about it:
Stop relying on time and effort alone and start thinking strategically about your next move
Explore opportunities outside your current team or organization
Invest in relationships, mentors, and networks that expand your options
Because sometimes the issue isn’t your performance. It’s the environment.
You’ve Outgrown This Version of Yourself
This one requires a different level of honesty. Sometimes, the reason you feel stuck is that you’ve outgrown the version of yourself that built this phase of your career. And that's okay!
As Claudia Warias says, we are not meant to be only one version of ourselves. We are meant to explore every facet of our lives.
I love telling people: you are more than one thing.
And so at this juncture, if your career feels stuck, give yourself permission to explore other aspects of your career. Feel excited that this feeling of being stuck is actually information.
At one point, this path made sense. You were learning, growing, building skills, and gaining experience. But growth doesn’t always mean staying on the same path indefinitely. There comes a point where what once felt aligned doesn't feel aligned anymore.
What to do about it:
Take time to reflect on what actually interests and energizes you now not what made sense 3–5 years ago
Explore adjacent paths, new industries, or different ways of using your existing skills
Give yourself permission to experiment before making a major shift (courses, side projects, conversations)
Revisit your definition of success and ask yourself: "has it changed?"
This is not about making a rushed decision to quit or pivot dramatically. It’s about recognizing that growth sometimes requires redefinition, not just progression.
