Trust the Process: A Strategic Approach to Personal and Career Development

Throughout the month of January we have discussed the importance of developing a vision for your life, the scientific and psychological benefits of using visualization tools such as vision boards, and the importance of developing a positive mindset while taking inspired actions to actualize your dreams. As we wrap up this theme, today’s #MondayMusing is dedicated to trusting the process. Though the call to trust the process might be misconstrued as advocating for a passive approach to life's journey, we are, in fact, encouraging a proactive stance. Specifically, we recommend strategic thinking, adopting a holistic view that extends beyond your career and engages personal development alongside professional growth. In other words, trusting the process is more like this: be intentional about your moves, see the bigger picture beyond just work, and know that developing yourself as a person enhances your chances of developing the type of career you desire.

Thinking Strategically: Navigating Career Crossroads

The path to success is not always a straightforward climb up the career ladder, starting from an entry-level position and reaching a senior managerial role. This reality can be a source of frustration for those anticipating a smooth and linear career progression. Sadly, we have been sold a certain notion that life is supposed to unfold seamlessly, and anything less is seen as a failure or a personal shortcoming. However, a close look at some of the careers in big organizations we may admire often reveals individuals holding the same position for more extended periods than they expected, and sometimes longer than what is beneficial for both them and the organization. This unintended stagnation can lead to pent up frustration and a negative perception of one's self-worth. The key to overcoming any frustration lies in understanding what actor Jamie Foxx once said,

"Success is not a straight line, it's more like a cha-cha." 

The first step is to disabuse your mind of what is supposed to happen. At times, situations do not pan out the way we hoped, and when that happens it is not a reflection of our value or abilities. Instead what we need to do is to think dispassionately about how to address what is actually happening. When upward mobility seems elusive, it is important to think strategically about your career. Consider lateral moves as opportunities for skill diversification and growth. What does that look like? Perhaps apply to a job that is at the same level as your current position but involves new and interesting opportunities for additional skills development. Or consider job opportunities within your current organization that stretch you and add skills that would be advantageous for where you wish you end up. The benefit of lateral moves is that each career move contributes to your overall development. Rather than remain stagnant in a position that you do not like and feel frustrated that a promotion is not available, why not promote yourself by promoting your skills in new and challenging tasks? As Oprah Winfrey once said,

"Trust the timing of your life. Keep focusing on putting one foot in front of the other, and then let the universe do its thing." 

Strategic Career Development

Strategic career development is not simply about landing the next gig. Sometimes landing the next gig is what we want and it is okay to be clear and upfront with yourself about that. Sometimes we are applying to a job simply to have financial stability, access to medical care, a pension system, or to have something in hand while we strategize about the next steps to actualize our dreams. Whatever your purpose, be clear about your goals.

If you are keen on strategic career development then it is important to understand what that means. Strategic career development involves the intentional and planned process of managing your professional growth and progression. It goes beyond simply moving from one job to another; instead, it focuses on aligning individual aspirations, skills, and interests with a well-thought-out plan to achieve long-term career goals. This approach includes strategic decision-making, continuous learning, skill enhancement, and adapting to changes in the professional landscape. So when we are thinking about strategic career development and we are faced with different job opportunities, instead of focusing solely on the job title, organization or brand name, and salary, consider the broader implications. How does the role align with your long-term goals? What opportunities for growth and skill development does it offer?

This strategic approach ensures that your career choices align with your aspirations, creating a more purposeful and sustainable trajectory. Think of it this way: all roads must lead to where I want to go - even the detours, crooked roads, or short cuts. By thinking about the broader career development goal you are able to see how the detours ultimately contribute to building the career profile you desire.

Impact: Beyond Climbing the Ladder into Fuller Personal Development

A fulfilling life involves more than merely advancing your career or increasing your financial stability. There are more than enough examples in the world of unhappy wealthy people or individuals at the pinnacle of their career who hold regrets. Don’t let this be you. What really matters to you? Define how you wish to make an impact in the world and be open to how these come about. Whether it is through your work, community involvement, or personal relationships, having a sense of purpose fuels your journey. Trusting the process means understanding that your impact may manifest in various ways beyond your initial idealized goals.

Personal and career development go hand in hand, with one significantly influencing the other. Investing in personal development, whether through acquiring new skills, seeking mentorship, or prioritizing mental well-being, enhances your overall potential. For example, without financial literacy, climbing the career ladder and getting paid more could easily become a situation of chasing after money because you have not yet learned how to manage the money you are receiving. As entrepreneur Jim Rohn aptly said,

"Your level of success will rarely exceed your level of personal development because success is something you attract by the person you become."

So friend, take a moment to reflect on all we have discussed this month. Now that the year is picking up steam, ask yourself: Is my vision for personal and career development crystal clear? Do I genuinely believe in my ability to achieve it? Am I ready to take inspired action and let opportunities flow, rather than trying to force things? Is my approach to my career more strategic or passive? Regardless of what your self-assessment reveals, remember you are not navigating this journey solo.
