From Goals to Action: Building a Strategic Framework for Career Moves

Hello Friends,

Here's a question for you: who’s really in the driver’s seat of your career? This isn’t a lighthearted question - it’s a significant one. Often, we find ourselves drifting along in our careers, feeling a sense of dissatisfaction but struggling to see a way toward the change we desire. We may send out a few job applications, complain to friends or co-workers, but still turn up day after day wishing and hoping for change. When this happens, you might realize you’re more of an unwilling passenger, either going with the flow or heading down a path that doesn’t genuinely fulfill you on a career path dictated by your circumstances. This November, we’re exploring strategic decision making for your professional development and today’s #MondayMusing explores how to build a strategic framework that could work for you.

Why a framework you might ask? A strong career framework can serve as your guide, helping you define clear goals, develop adaptable plans, and build resilience through each stage of your journey. If you have never considered developing one (or you have one that is collecting dust in an old computer file) then join me as we break down key themes you want to consider to put your dreams and goals into action.

Do You Have A Vision for Your Career?

The starting point of any career plan that takes you from goals and dreams to action is a clear and inspiring vision. Where do you see yourself in five, ten, or even twenty years? What are you doing? Where are you? What role or roles are you performing? Consider what you truly want from your career  and take time to visualize it. It is not sufficient to say “I want a leadership role.” Break that down further and be sincere with yourself: what does that leadership role entail? Are you managing people or are you primarily developing ideas?  Saying “I want to do impactful work” is a wonderful start but your vision can’t end there. Dig further - who are you impacting? Where? How? With whom? Taking time to create a vision for where you want to see yourself is an important first step that should not be omitted. As you do this, reflect on your values, strengths, and aspirations to create a vision that genuinely resonates with you.

Visualize Your Plan A and Beyond

Once you have a vision, imagine your ideal pathway to reach it. Create a detailed picture of “Plan A” - the most direct or desirable route to your goal. I often call this reaching for the stars! This might involve getting specific promotions, gaining particular skills, or securing a dream role. Visualizing your plan A and what that path could look like can bring clarity to the steps involved.  One hack that can help you plan out your Plan A is to check the job descriptions for positions that interest you. Even if you are several years away from such a post, looking at these positions can help you see the type of profile that would be considered attractive to the organizations or jobs of your dreams.

But remember: career paths are hardly linear. Life can disrupt even the best-laid plans and to avoid being completely derailed, it is essential to create backup plans. Develop “Plan B” and “Plan C” alternatives that still align with your vision but offer different routes and bring a smile to your face. In other words, aim so high that your Plans B and C are someone else’s Plan A. For example, if you’re aiming to transition into a new industry, one plan might focus on gaining experience in a related role, while another could prioritize building a specialized skill set through certifications.

These alternative plans provide flexibility, ensuring that your momentum continues even if the journey begins to look different than you expected. Having several pathways in mind keeps you focused on your vision. I cannot emphasize that enough. Oftentimes we get caught up with the job or organization we want but we forget the vision. Keep your eye on the prize (vision of the life you want to create) and be open to the different paths that can take you there.

Identify Key Skills and Competencies

With your vision and plans in mind, identify the skills and competencies necessary for each potential path (remember the job descriptions mentioned above?). Think about the expertise required for your ideal role as well as the supporting skills that will make you a strong candidate in your field. Research industry trends to determine what skills will be most valuable in the future, then begin prioritizing your development accordingly.

In addition, don’t forget “what you have in your hands”. Start where you are - don’t discount skills, knowledge, and competencies you have already developed. Even if your dream career is in a different industry nothing is wasted. You probably have amazing transferable skills that you are not maximizing.

Develop a Support Network of Mentors and Allies

Any ambitious career journey is enhanced by a strong support network. Dr. Tayler Ava Friar, one of Konseye’s mentors, discussed the concept of having a personal board of directors—mentors who offer guidance while navigating important career decisions. Building connections with mentors, peers, and colleagues who can offer guidance, insights, and encouragement along the way is an important aspect of your career framework.  Look for mentors who have already navigated the challenges you anticipate and can share lessons from their experiences. While you should never let anyone else dictate your career choices, connecting with other professionals can reassure you that you're not alone on your journey. At the very least, these relationships can help you feel supported; at best, they can open doors to opportunities you may not have considered and provide motivation during challenging times.

Strengthen Your Personal Brand

In a competitive job market, a strong personal brand can be an invaluable asset. Think of your brand as the reputation you want to build. What do you want to be known for, and how do you want to be perceived by others? Build your online presence on platforms like LinkedIn, where you can share insights, achievements, and thought leadership within your field.

Your personal brand not only sets you apart but also attracts opportunities that align with your goals. Consistently presenting yourself as a knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and thoughtful professional can help you stand out to potential employers, clients, and collaborators.

Flexibility is Key: Evaluate and Adjust as You Progress

If it wasn't already clear from my suggestion to have a Plan A, B, and C, let me emphasize that your career framework should be flexible. As you make progress, take time to reflect and assess whether your vision, goals, and plans are still in alignment. You might discover that the job you once dreamed of isn’t as suitable as you thought, or after a few years in a specific industry, you may feel drawn to pursue a completely different career path. Regularly evaluating your progress and vision allows you to celebrate successes, recognize growth, and adapt to new circumstances.

If a new opportunity arises or an obstacle shifts your course, revisit your alternative plans. Staying adaptable doesn’t mean abandoning your vision; it means embracing new ways to pursue it. The ability to evolve with circumstances while staying committed to your goal is what will make your career strategy resilient.

Moving Forward with Clarity and Confidence

A strategic career framework built on vision, adaptability, skill development, and strong networks empowers you to confidently navigate your career. By focusing on the vision rather than a rigid path lined with organizations and job titles, you’re better prepared to achieve your goals.
