BECOMING: Not Re-Inventing

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the first #MondayMusing of the new year. I hope 2026 has started off gently and with moments that remind you why you are excited about what’s ahead.

You see, January has a way of inviting reflection. Funny enough this month, most of my friends have eschewed the traditional goal setting to instead focusing on who they want to be this year. And when I thought about it - this is the perfect theme for January's #MondayMusing: BECOMING, intentionally - on your own terms.

Why is this important? Well, so often, the start of a new year is framed around fixing, replacing, or radically changing ourselves (cue the new gym memberships!). But becoming doesn’t ask you to abandon who you are. It asks you to pay attention. To notice what already exists within you and decide consciously and intentionally what you want to nurture, strengthen, or step into more fully.

From a psychological perspective, intention-setting works because the brain responds to clarity. When we clearly imagine who we want to become, we activate motivation, focus, and behavioral consistency. Research around identity-based goals shows that when people anchor their actions to the type of person they want to be instead of only outcomes and achievements, change becomes achievable (and more sustainable).

We are no longer just chasing goals; we start acting in alignment with the identity we’re growing into. So here are three key steps to guide your thinking as you imagine the year ahead.

Ready? Let's get into it!

Name the version of you that feels most aligned.

Instead of asking, “What should I achieve this year?” try asking, “Who do I want to be more consistently?” Perhaps it’s someone more focused. More courageous. More rested. More intentional with time and energy. Naming this version of yourself creates an internal compass and helps you evaluate decisions, opportunities, and commitments through a clearer lens.

Visualize the year beyond milestones.

Goals are very helpful, but becoming helps you in the in-between moments.

How you show up on ordinary days matters even more than the goals you set. Here's why. For example, you have earmarked 2026 as the year to complete and pass professional exams. However to achieve this goal, you need to become a more disciplined person. That sounds obvious enough to you until you realize that you need to both become and practice disciplined not only when you are preparing for the professional exams but in your every day life. To consistently be a person who sets aside the required time to learn and practice in the midst of other things vying for your time and attention, you need to be the person who is disciplined in other aspects. You become the person who achieves the goal - even in ordinary days.

Therefore, take time to imagine your year holistically. What does a good week feel like? How do you want to respond to challenges? What rhythms support the person you’re becoming? Visualizing the PERSON (not just the accomplished goal) is a cognitive rehearsal that prepares the mind to recognize and act on aligned opportunities. Translate intention into strategic action.

Let's be honest - becoming is not as easy as talking about it.

Becoming is real when it is supported by systems. This might look like setting boundaries that protect your focus, designing routines that reinforce your values, or choosing fewer priorities so you can commit more deeply. When intention and action align, progress becomes sustainable rather than exhausting.

As we move through January, I invite you to return to these prompts often. Remember:

Becoming is a series of choices made with awareness and care.
